On Dec. 19, 1944, Bud entered the U.S. Army and served until Nov. 9, 1945. Following his discharge he returned to South Dakota and took a job with the railroad at Blunt. He worked for the railroad for only a short time when more or less by accident he found himself working for the Korkow Family in 1947.
For the next 51 years he kept the Korkow Trucks rolling down the road. Bud could fix anything with a pliers or screw driver and kept everything running on the ranch. Besides driving truck and doing mechanic work, Bud also enjoyed working with the bucking stock. After he hauled the stock to the rodeo you would find Bud behind the chutes working as a flank man. Bud knew all of the Korkow stock intimately and had a special knack for calmly handling the stock and knowing how to flank them to get them to buck their best. Bud always rooted for the stock, and was responsible for having more world champion cowboys get bucked off than anybody. On August 28, 1949, Bud married Dona Borden at the Church of Christ in Blunt. They lived and raised their family in Blunt. In 2004, Bud and Dona moved to Hot Springs so that he was closer to his doctors, In 2007, he became a resident of the Castle Manor Care Center in Hot Springs and in January 2009, Bud and Dona Moved to Pierre where he was a resident of the Golden Living Center in Pierre where until the time of his death.
